Cary Begins Sewer AndD Water Improvements As Part Of Downtown Streetscape Project
CARY, NC – As part of the Downtown Cary Streetscape Project, the Town of Cary is moving forward on the $2.6 million to replace and upgrade existing water and sewer lines within the Streetscape project area to meet future capacity needs and lower future maintenance and construction costs. The Town will begin conducting sewer system investigations and utility depth locations in downtown Cary today, including locating existing sewer service lines.
During the project, contractors will be accessing the service lines through manholes in East and West Chatham streets, North and South Academy streets, North Harrison Avenue, Dry Avenue and Kildaire Farm Road. The service lines will be cleaned and inspected. The investigations will require the presence of heavy equipment, including a sewer cleaning truck, a televising van and support trucks. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to maintain a safe distance from all equipment. At the end of each work day, the equipment will be removed from the street. Sewer lateral locations may be marked at the surface for surveying purposes.
Contractors will be working primarily on public property within the roadway right-of-way. The work will be conducted Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Signage and other traffic control devices will be used to direct traffic. Temporary lane closures are expected; however, workers will make every effort to minimize travel delays. The work is expected to last approximately four weeks, during which water and sewer services should not be interrupted.
Once work has been completed, the design team will be able to evaluate the location of the service lines to determine conflicts with other utilities and finalize the design of the streetscape improvements.
Sewer line modifications will occur during construction of the Streetscape project. Improvements will include point repairs, re-lining of the sewer lines, and manhole rehabilitation. In addition, all water lines and service taps to the water lines will be replaced within the streetscape area during construction. Construction for the Downtown Cary Streetscape Project is estimated to begin in Fall 2009 and last approximately 18 months.
