CARY GOES DOOR-TO-DOOR TO KICKOFF DESIGN PHASE OF STREETSCAPE PROJECT
CARY, NC – Project engineers for the Downtown Streetscape Project in Cary are taking it to the streets and going door-to-door on Friday, March 30, 2007 to talk individually with area business owners and citizens about the $33 million downtown project. Kyle Hubert, senior engineer with the Town of Cary, and Tyson Graves, transportation business practice manager with Arcadis – the design consultant for the project – will walk around downtown and speak with residents and tenants located on East Chatham Street between Academy Street and East Durham Road about questions related to the project from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“We are looking forward to this opportunity to talk one-on-one with the people who will witness the progress and experience the benefits of the project firsthand,” said Hubert. “By putting a name and face with the project, we hope to reassure our community that we are committed to making this the best streetscapes project in the Triangle.”
The meet-and-greet is just one of multiple opportunities for the public to provide input. As part of the planning process, the Town presented streetscape design concepts and options to business owners in September 2005. Additional public input on the Downtown Cary Streetscape Master Plan was obtained at a workshop in April 2006. The next opportunity for public comment will be in late May or early June when the Town will present preliminary construction plans. Notification of future events will be sent at as the event approaches.
In March 2007, the Town of Cary awarded Arcadis the contract to design the streetscape project that will create a unique identity for downtown Cary by incorporating pedestrian-friendly design elements such as a Town Square, on-street parking, landscaping, and widened sidewalks. The design will embrace the heritage of the area, while creating a desired destination that meets the needs of Cary’s citizens, businesses and visitors. The streetscape project will encompass more than two miles of downtown streets in Cary, North Carolina with construction scheduled to begin next year.
